Introduction
Moti Masjid, also known as “The pearl mosque”, is a three domed mosque constructed by white marbles and stands on the red sandstone wall. The Masjid is famous for its well organized structures and extensive significances. It was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his kin and court chiefs to worship. As the mosque is made of white marbles, it used to shine like a pearl in ancient times, and hence got the name “The pearl mosque.” The mosque is not too far from Agra city, and a regular bus service to it is available. Also the railway station and airport are situated within 8 km. In other words, Moti Masjid is not only a pleasant place to visit but can also be reached conveniently.
Architecture
Moti Masjid stands on the ground that inclines through east to west to the north of Diwan-i-Am complex in Agra Fort. The Masjid has a courtyard with six arcades and the main sanctuary façade, and arched recessions. Three bulbous domes, constructed of light white marbles and erected on the red sandstone walls are roofed on the sanctuary. There are seven bays, divided into corridors which are supported by piers and lobed arches. The masjid boasts of its shining white marble facing. The cost incurred in the construction of Masjid, was approximately one lakh sixty thousand rupees, and it took four years to build.
