Gangtok town is the capital of Sikkim. This hill station is the largest town in its state. Gangtok is situated in the lower Himalayas in Sikkim state. It has an average elevation of 1,650 m. It is placed on one side of a hill with two streams on its either side. The slopes are steep and prone to landslides. A large area of Gangtok is covered by forests. The town experiences a subtropical highland climate which makes it a pleasant place throughout the year. There are fewer variations in the temperature from season to season.
Gangtok has a difficult terrain and the direct connection is only by road. Rail and air transport is available from nearby towns.
Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport, 16km away from Siliguri. Gangtok is soon to get its own airport.
Rail: The railway station is 124 km at New Jalpaiguri is on the rail route of trains coming from Guwahati and connects this place to Delhi, Kolkata and other metro cities.
Roadways: The town can be reached by buses and taxis directly or via Siliguri. It takes about 4 hours from Siliguri.
Local Transport: To get around in the town, taxis are available. The other option is to take cable cart which is feasible for selected places only.
