Chilika is a briny water lake in Odisha that flows through eastern coast of India before merging into Bay of Bengal. Chilika is completely navigable and stands as a winter-home for different species of migratory birds. Also, this lake is a residence to large number of fishes that are a major source of food and livelihood for those living near the coastal areas.
The Chilika Lake is hemmed by the tranquil and green hills of Eastern Ghats. The lake covers an area of 1165 sq. km. that increases during heavy downpour. Chilika Lake is a home to rare aqua fauna species like milk fish, Irrawaddy dolphins, migratory bottlenose dolphins, bream fish etc. Other prime attractions near Chilika are Nalbana Bird Sanctuary, Nirmaljhara Waterfalls and the holy city of Puri are flocked by hundreds of tourists at regular intervals.
