The town of Badami in Karnataka was the regal capital of Badami Chalukya dynasty during 540 to 757 AD. It was formerly known as Vatapi. The town got its name from a demon Vatapi. The two famous hills in the town representing Vatapi and his brother are of Badam (Almond) like colour, which gave the town its new name Badami.
Badami is located at 15.92°N 75.68°E with an elevation of 586m. The town surrounds the Agastya water reservoir on three sides and is situated at the threshold of a ravine between two hills.
The region faces extreme summers from March to June, Monsoon from July to October and mild winters from November to January. The period from November to March is the apt time to visit.
Badami has a small railway station which connects it to other cities in Karnataka. Roadways are also a feasible option with buses connecting the town to major cities. The nearest airport is in Belgaum at a distance of about 150km.
The town is a small one and can be covered on foot. However, there are many rickshaws which can easily take one around. Tourists can also avail the facility of passenger autos for a day trip.
